Conservative evangelicals are living through a time of significant transition. The recent glorification of our most stalwart leaders—starting with the incomparable R.C. Sproul, followed this past year by the exemplary John MacArthur and the courageous Voddie Baucham—causes us to rejoice in gratitude to God for His good and perfect gifts of leadership, even as we mourn the loss of our heroes.
Times of transition are by nature times of apprehension, perhaps some anxiety; but there’s also a chance to redeem the time, making the most of a new season filled with great opportunity.
Among the younger generations, the Gen Zers and the younger Millennials, there is an uptick in religious interest. On the one hand, they have become disillusioned with secularism and modernity; they are weary of the megachurch movement and distrustful of Big Eva. On the other hand, they show an interest in true historical rootedness, deep theological conviction, and real spiritual transformation.
The older generations, the Gen Xers and the Boomers, are the custodians of the religious institutions they inherited. They can tend to meet the interest and the curiosity of the young with the reticence of middle management, reluctant to engage the hard questions, unsettled by the turbulence in times of change. Regardless of their intent, hesitation to speak and slowness to act can come across as smothering, like cold wet blankets cast over so many faintly burning wicks.
The answer for older generations is not in institutional protection or reasserting the party line. The answer for younger generations is not in following the latest and greatest influencer, a savvy pied piper for whom your interest is his grift, who makes merchandise of your time and attention.
The answer for all generations, for the old and the young, is Holy Scripture.
As always, the old ways are tried and true. God said through Jeremiah, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you shall find rest for your souls” (Jer. 6:16). His call was a return to the Word of God, “that they may hear and learn to fear Yahweh your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, as long as you live” (Deut. 31:13).
What Isaiah said to his own generation, we say to ours: “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn” (Isa. 8:20). Refusing to heed the Word means following a wandering heart, dejected and starving; burning with an enraged heart that spurns the authority of men and God; suffering under a discouraged heart that looks around and sees only “distress, darkness, and the gloom of affliction” (Isa. 8:21-22).
Positively, returning to the Word of God means life (Deut. 32:47), blessedness and fruitfulness (Psa. 1:3), salvation (Psa. 119:41), the power of salvation (1 Cor. 1:18), the ministry of the Spirit and full conviction (1 Thess. 1:5), sanctification (1 Pet. 2:2), the power of God (Heb. 1:3), assurance (Col. 2:2), righteousness (Psa. 119:172), and so much more. Who doesn’t need all this? Who wouldn’t want it?
